What are assessments and plans?

Assessment helps to identify strengths, challenges, interests and learning styles and then matches that profile to resources and tools that can maximize an individual’s learning potential within a given setting or activity.

It can also assist to extend skills, maximize opportunities, to engage with others within their community. It may be designed as a targeted approach for a specific skill or to look at a holistic approach to development.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE ASSESSMENTS

Assesses the areas of academics, communication: comprehension, verbal and non-verbal skills, speech sound development, functionality, intent, social communication and intent.

When:
8am – 2pm weekdays

 

MEALTIME ASSESSMENTS AND PLANS

Mealtime Assessments

For individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) difficulties with mealtimes commonly occur, however, the degree of deficit and impact on subsequent eating and drinking, positioning and independence can be experienced differently.

Leonard Autism & Rehabilitation Centre has experienced therapy staff with specialised training in the area of mealtime assessment and management of individuals on the Autism Spectrum. Mealtime trained staffs work collaboratively to assess skills and identify deficits commonly in the areas of:

  • Oral motor development/ skills
  • The phases of swallowing
  • Sensory processing influences
  • Food selectivity and volume
  • Independence skills
  • Posture and motor skills impacting on positioning
  • Environmental impacts

 

Mealtime Therapy

Individual Mealtime Therapy

Following an assessment, mealtime therapy with the concerned staff in the area of mealtime intervention may be administered.

Mealtime Therapy Groups

A mealtime intervention group is transdisciplinary , focusing on increasing an individual’s comfort level with food though structured intervention.

Sensory, oral motor, motor and independence skills are addressed as they impact on the mealtime. In addition, individuals will learn how to set up a mealtime environment through creating a predictable routine.

Visual supports and strategies to increase motivation and trying new and non-preferred foods are explicitly taught to enhance skills in these areas.

 

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSESSMENTS

To identify strengths and challenges that individuals may experience in everyday life

Areas assessed may include:

  • Daily living/independence skills
  • Gross and fine motor difficulties
  • Perceptual difficulties
  • Sensory difficulties
  • Play and leisure skills
  • Work related skills
  • Social skills
  • Behaviour and emotional regulation
  • Attention/concentration

 

MOBILITY MANAGEMENT PLANS

Provides strategies and recommendations related to an individuals’ functional physical capacity to engage safely across a variety of environments.

 

BEHAVIOURAL AND EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT PLAN

Individualised intervention plans may include behaviour management and emotional regulation strategies and standardised assessments .
